President Richard Nixon won re-election in 1972 in a true landslide, receiving over 60% of the popular vote (Trump got less than 50%), winning 49 states (Trump won 31) and the electoral count by 520 to 17 (Trump won 320 to 226).           Yet Nixon was forced to resign less than two years after his massive victory, facing scandals of infinitely lesser magnitude than those staring us in the face today. As the pressure from the outraged American public on officeholders stubbornly loyal to Trump grows, it will be The Donald Who Would Be King’s turn to choose impeachment or resignation. But Vice President J.D. Vance, complicit in the lawbreaking, must go first, ala Agnew. That’s got to be part of the deal. Trump and Vance will walk away, as Agnew and then Nixon did, to avoid criminal proceedings and forestall further national turmoil. The challenge we face is to find a Republican to fill the presidential position through 2028 who can be trusted to uphold The Constitution, respect the rule of law, and restore our democracy (it’s not perfect, but it’s ours!) as Gerald Ford did.
